RESEARCH INTERESTS
Physical organic, bioorganic, molecular recognition, supramolecular chemistry, materials. Broadly speaking, we are interested in how molecules interact with each other and being able to predictably design these connections into our systems. These contacts can provide the basis for molecular recognition and sensing applications or as a means to assemble higher order aggregates in a well-defined manner. Each project begins with the design and synthesis of target compounds followed by studies to determine the effectiveness of the proposed intermolecular interactions. Ultimately we enjoy working on projects that have some perceived application as a device or in some process where it is possible to envision an end use beyond the lab, for example, as sensory devices, in photovoltaic applications, or molecular electronics. With this in mind, the organic element is typically coupled to an analytical, physical, biochemical or even basic engineering component as part of the work experience gained in the group.
