October

Congratulations! Drs. Prakash Nagarkatti, Mitizi Nagarkatti, and Lorne Hofseth who recieved a $6 million dollar NIH grant putting the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine among the growing ranks of prestigious institutions studying alternative and complementary medicine.

August

Congratulations! The Center for Colon Cancer Research was awarded $10.7 million by the National Institutes of Health. Thank you to all the CCCR PIs that helped make this happen. **See The State's article (PDF)

Congratulations! On August 6th the 2nd annual statwide leadership summit was held, entitled, Dialogue for Action: The Inside Story about Colon Cancer in South Carolina
Marriott (Downtown) Columbia, SC. The was one of the largest CRC summits nationally!

Over 130 leaders from around the state attended this meeting, including South Carolina's Senator Thomas and Rep. Cobb-Hunter. The Dialogue for Action summit was an innovative, consensus-building and action-oriented forum was the start of a statewide to reduce colorectal cancer incidence and morbidity in our state. The audience at the summit was composed of primary care providers (including family practice physicians, internists, OB-GYNs, nurse practitioners and physician assistants), gastroenterologists, survivors, policymakers, health plans, insurers, health advocates, researchers, and others who influence access to screening. Over 50,000 dollars will be earmarked towards implementation.

July 2007

Congratulations! Wayne Outten has been notified that his first R01 application will be funded.  Wayne's grant focuses on microbial iron homeostasis under conditions of stress.

June 2007

Congratulations! Lorne Hofseth, Mitzi Nagarkatti, and Prakash Nagarkatti just learned that they received an excellent score on their grant application to create a Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  Each of them will be a PI on a project that focuses on the mechanisms by which various herbal compounds modulate immune and inflammatory responses.

Congratulations! Deanna Smith received a superb score on her R01 application, and it very much looks like she will be funded.  The grant supports her studies of dynein motors in cellular differentiation and motility.

The Center for Colon Cancer Research, in partnership with Gibbs Regional Hospital and the Betty Ann Moore Foundation, raised over $30,000 for colon cancer programs statewide at our first annual Unmasking Colon Cancer ball.  Thank you to everyone who supported this marvelous evening for a great cause!
