South Carolina’s Dialogue for Action (DFA)
On August 6th the 2nd annual statwide leadership summit was held, entitled, Dialogue for Action: The Inside Story about Colon Cancer in South Carolina
Marriott (Downtown) Columbia, SC. The was one of the largest CRC summits nationally!

Over 130 leaders from around the state attended this meeting, including South Carolina's Senator Thomas and Rep. Cobb-Hunter. The Dialogue for Action summit was an innovative, consensus-building and action-oriented forum was the start of a statewide to reduce colorectal cancer incidence and morbidity in our state. The audience at the summit was composed of primary care providers (including family practice physicians, internists, OB-GYNs, nurse practitioners and physician assistants), gastroenterologists, survivors, policymakers, health plans, insurers, health advocates, researchers, and others who influence access to screening. Over 50,000 dollars was rised, which will be applied towards implementation. PDF of DFA agenda.

The Fishin’ for a Mission catfish fishing tournament to benefit USC’s Center for Colon Cancer Research will be June 23 in Santee on Lake Marion. The $25 registration fee. CRC Billboards – 2007 March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
The Center for Colon Cancer Research at the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Cancer Alliance and the South Carolina Gastroenterology Association collaborated on a colorectal cancer awareness campaign during March 2007.  The team developed a billboard campaign throughout South Carolina to promote awareness about colorectal cancer.  The March 2007 billboards (featuring local survivors) were placed in Anderson, Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Georgetown, Greenville, Greenwood, Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Spartanburg and Sumter.

CRC Legislative Briefing – February 22, 2007
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance (SCCA) Advocacy and Policy Task Force with support from the SCCA Colorectal Cancer Work Group coordinated and hosted the first SCCA Legislative Briefing meeting.  It was held on Thursday, February 22, 2007.  March Seabrook, MD, FACG was the featured guest speaker.  He presented information about the prevention of colorectal cancer and the importance of screening.  Key legislators attended this meeting; forty-seven house members and seven senators attended.  There were also several colorectal cancer survivors and family members in attendance who shared their stories with our legislators. 

Shortly after the meeting the SCCA learned that screening colonoscopy coverage was added to the State Health Plan effective January 1, 2007.  This will impact an estimated 95,000 state employees.

Collaboration with The State Health Plan Prevention Partners & The Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation
The Center for Colon Cancer Research at the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Cancer Alliance and the South Carolina Gastroenterology Association have collaborated with The State Health Plan Prevention Partners program.  The mission of The State Health Plan Prevention Partners is to provide activities, programs and services that encourage health promotion, disease prevention and early detection of disease in South Carolina’s state agencies, public schools, and local subdivisions.  Four regional colorectal cancer awareness lunch and learn sessions are planned throughout South Carolina.   The focus of the lunch and learn sessions is to increase awareness among state employees about the prevention of colorectal cancer and to encourage state employees to take advantage of the new colorectal cancer screening benefit included in the state health plan (effective 1.1.2007).  The first session is scheduled for June 13, 2007 and it will be held in Columbia.  Dr. March Seabrook will be the featured presenter.  A standard presentation and evaluation tool will be developed for all four lunch and learn sessions.  The Susan Cohan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation (www.coloncancerfoundation.org) has committed to sponsoring the lunch for all of the regional sessions for state employees.  Sessions will also be held in Spartanburg/Anderson, Charleston and Florence
CRC Awareness Walk – Saturday, March 10, 2007 8am
The 7th Annual Colorectal Cancer Awareness Walk occurred on Saturday, March 10, 2007.  The walk was held at Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street and over 300 people participated in this event to raise awareness about colorectal cancer.

 

Celebrating Our Surviving Spirit  - March 27, 2007 6pm – 8pm
In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month the Palmetto Health South Carolina Cancer Center sponsored “Celebrating Our Surviving Spirit” with nationally recognized cancer survivor Beverly Kirkhart as guest speaker.  The event was held from 6pm – 8pm on March 27, 2007 in the Palmetto Health Baptist Auditorium, 1501 Sumter Street, Ground Floor. 

SCCA/AARP Collaboration – Frank Knapp Show – March 2007
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance collaborated with the SC Chapter of the AARP to promote awareness about colorectal cancer in South Carolina.  The AARP allotted time each Friday during Frank Knapp’s radio show (1230 am) to discuss colorectal cancer. Dr. March Seabrook (gastroenterologist), Ros Squirewell (CRC Survivor), Dr. Dan Dixon (researcher with the Center for Colon Cancer Research at the University of South Carolina) and Dr. Frank Berger (Director of the Center for Colon Cancer Research at the University of South Carolina) participated in the radio series.

Unmasking Colon Cancer – A Masquerade Ball- February 24, 2007
The first Unmasking Colon Cancer Masquerade Ball was held on February 24, 2007 in Charleston at The Citadel.  Over 200 people attended this event and over $30,000 was raised.  The money raised will be used to increase awareness of and to promote research in colorectal cancer.

2006

SCCA- Forms CRC Workgroup- 2006
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance has formed a Colorectal Cancer Workgroup.  The mission is to increase awareness and collaboration of statewide efforts to reduce the burden of colorectal cancer in South Carolina.  The first objective identified is to increase CRC screening. 

South Carolina Study of Endoscopy Capacity (SECAP)
DHEC partnered with CDC to conduct the SECAP study to assess endoscopic capacity in South Carolina.  Overall, results showed that necessary screening for all eligible South Carolinians could be achieved over two years.  An executive summary and the full report can be downloaded from the SCCA website.  www.sccanceralliance.org

South Carolina Medical Association
The journal of the South Carolina Medical Association recently dedicated an entire journal to health disparities.  One of the articles was entirely dedicated to colorectal cancer.  Full Text (PDFs):
